Business and Education Partnerships in Kentucky
- Partnership for Successful Schools
Launched initially by the Business Roundtable, the Partnership was created by executives at UPS, Humana Inc., and Ashland Inc. (all Kentucky-based companies), who invited about 50 other Kentucky business leaders to work on education reform. The Partnership serves as a resource for businesses looking to become involved in education. The Partnership sponsors research and roundtables to study and disseminate statewide professional development practices. Business Connections for Excellence in Education is a program offering specific ideas for ways businesses can get involved on behalf of student achievement. The Learning Equals Earning program encourages businesses to request high school transcripts from job applicants for entry-level jobs. It is also the state sponsor of the Kentucky Scholars Initiative.
- Kentucky Chamber of Commerce
Founded in 1946, the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce is a statewide nonprofit organization that represents the economic and political interests of over 7,000 businesses throughout Kentucky. The Chamber played a primary role as a member of the Business Forum, a coalition of engaged business, civic, and education leaders, formed in 2004 to develop first principles to "enhance employer involvement in education." The Forum was able to construct a set of principles that Kentucky's business community collaborated on and supported uniformly.
- The Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence
The Prichard Committee, founded in 1980 as an independent nonprofit organization, focuses on advocacy for education reform in Kentucky at all levels of instruction P-20. It relies exclusively on corporations, foundations, and individuals to fund its efforts. The Commonwealth Institute for Parent Leadership is an advocacy program that has trained over 1,300 parents about their role in education reform at the community level. The idea is to go beyond the parents' traditional roles and focus on parents' potential for helping improve student achievement.
